Phase I of GIBY’s refit of a Bertram 31 is nearing completion. During the early stages of this project a pair of Yanmar engines were pulled for their 1,000-hour valve service. While the engines were out of the boat, a severe crack in the fiberglass hull (near one of the struts) was repaired; rotten bulkheads and cockpit stringers were replaced, stiffening the deck; the bilge was painted; and the steering system was inspected and adjusted, removing “slop” at the helm. Once the engines are realigned, later this spring, an old vibration issue will also be eliminated.
